Glenn Jones House Concert

The Glenn Jones House Concert was recorded September 2006 in or around Seattle.
I consider Glenn to be one of the torch bearers for the great guitar playing style of John Fahey. Despite what the AllMusic review of his first studio release, I believe he does break new ground. The tunings and capo use is inventive and results in sounds that while true to Fahey, are more modern sounding and mature. American Primitive all grown up? Perhaps.

Probably the other factor is that Jones plays music that is very moody, not like that bad girlfriend you once had, but music that creates an aura. The guitar in Jones' hands is a storyteller. Too many instrumental guitarists fail to move me, not because they lack technique, but because they rely on it. Glenn has both technique and a story telling ability. Fahey was, at times, short on technique, but it didn't matter, he got the message across. Glenn likes to use dissonance to create the story he is telling and I think he has really taken it to another level. Fahey's Dance of Death was amazing, but I don't think he ever topped it or matched it and it was rather early in his long career. Jones is also fond of playing the 12 string. Gotta love the 12 string.
Give it a listen and please drop a comment.

Cul de Sac - Copenhagen, DK - April 5th, 2003

Cul de Sac are a rock music group formed in 1990 in Boston, Massachusetts and led by guitarist Glenn Jones. Their music is primarily instrumental. Jones and keyboardist Robin Amos have been the only constant members.

They have been classified by some as post rock, but Jones has expressed some discomfort with the term. He states that Cul de Sac is the most "musically satisfying" group he's been involved with; a group that is the "closest to being the band I'd dreamed of forming. It allows me to combine my love of open-tuned guitar, played fingerstyle, with my love for electronics and noise, all placed within a rhythmic rock framework." Jones occasionally plays "The Contraption," a prepared lap steel guitar.

Cul de Sac have collaborated with guitarist John Fahey and with Can singer Damo Suzuki.

Glenn Jones has also recorded two solo albums, This Is the Wind That Blows It Out (2004) and Against Which the Sea Continually Beats (2007).

Robbie Basho Tribute & Film Benefit Concert

Saturday, August 23rd in Philadelphia

Johnny Brenda's and Alabaster Museum present a special concert in tribute to the late guitarist Robbie Basho. The event is also a benefit to raise funds to complete the first ever documentary film about Basho - titled Voice Of The Eagle: The Enigma Of Robbie Basho - currently in the works by London-based filmmaker Liam Barker.

The lineup includes performances by Virginia based guitarist Daniel Bachman, Glenn Jones, Maine based folk duo Arborea, and Chicago based guitarist/singer-songwriter Ryley Walker. ….performers whose work has been inspired by Robbie Basho's music.  A preview of the film in production will be featured during the evening, and a drawing to win a vinyl copy of the Robbie Basho tribute record 'We Are All One, In The Sun'...produced by Arborea for Important Records in 2010.  The album made Acoustic Guitar Magazine's Best Albums of 2010, 'Editors Top Pick' Guitar Player Magazine, Pitchfork 7.9, etc.  The 180 gram vinyl edition of the Basho tribute was released on the UK label alt.vinyl in a limited 300 copy edition and is now Sold Out (I've got one, do you? :)).

In addition to raising money through ticket sales, we are also shooting the concert and making a digital download of the concert film available to those who donate on this website.

The concert video will feature performances by all the musicians on stage that evening: Daniel Bachman, Glenn Jones, Arborea, and Ryley Walker.  It will be professionally shot in HD on 4 cameras and directed by Jesse Sheppard, whose credits include "The Things That We Used To Do" the 2010 performance DVD featuring Glenn Jones and Jack Rose.

In addition to the concert, we are also offering copies of the concert poster, designed by Argentinian guitarist and artist Mariano Rodriguez.

Yair Yona - World Behind Curtains

It usually takes me a couple times to process a new collection of music.  I like to let it sit on the aural palate for a bit to get a handle on it.  Yair Yona's sophomore effort, World Behind Curtains is no different.  My emerging feeling was that this was a movie soundtrack.  But after a listen or two that didn't seem quite right.  Sure, it's cinematic, sweeping and gorgeous.  But there's more.

The opening track was speaking to me like an overture of life.  It sounds like a journey.  And the opening piece struck me as a composite of life, everything is humming along nicely and suddenly reality comes barging in.  No matter, Yona keeps pickin' and grinin' because like all of us, what choice do we have?

As I continued to listen to this effort I couldn't help but feel that each piece was emblematic of the stages of life we all go through.  A fascinating journey populated by Yona's unique and inventive arrangement of instruments ranging from string quartets to bouzouki to electric guitar.  And all of this nicely anchored by his influences.

Yona likes to get his heroes, his influences, all right out in the open.  His first release had a song paying tribute to John Fahey.  In this release Glenn Jones and Leo Kottke both get mentions in song titles.

This release is no surprise when you listen to Skinny Fists and Russian Dance form his first release, Remember. Should have seen this coming.  But who knew he would be so fantastically good at it?

Everyone interested in the American Primitive genre needs to sit up and take notice of this release.  This is a beautiful effort and frankly there is nothing primitive about it.  The music is mature, confident and, thankfully as fresh as anything in the realm of this style to be found out there!

World Behind Curtains hits the streets Feb. 14th.

Pre-order now, also listen to streaming...oh and limited edition vinyl!

Glenn Jones: The Wanting...double LP set...on Thrill Jockey Records... (2011)

I was sleepily floating down the Sunflower River one day on a hollowed out old banyan log shaped like some ancient, neanderthalesque 12 string guitar...

When...all of a sudden..........

With a glass of wine in hand (and two in my belly!), I swooned under the restless spell of timeless guitar music...a dance of life that rained down upon my naked and bleeding soul from vast cotton candy clouds and turquoise sunshine oceans...notes that tickled my ears...like 50 billion vermillion spiders dancing across my starving synapses...nerve endings craving for the taste of delicacies found in out of the way, abandoned, rusty old diners and dusty, snake infested arroyos...train stations situated just on the outskirts of Valhalla...just a short trek down a sand strewn desert highway...where cacti signposts point the way...where scorpions and vultures welcome you once you arrive...

Thus are the feelings that envelop me each time I listen to Glenn Jones The Wanting 2-LP set...

I loathe to bring in comparisons, although Robbie Basho, William Ackerman, Michael Gulezian and Billy Faier (some pretty heavyweight talents IMHO)...immediately come to mind...and Glenn is right up there with those highly esteemed purveyors of musical wizardry...

I will not bore the reader with a song by song description of this double slab of shimmering vinyl delight...Glenns thoughts and notes regarding his music are all we need...let your ears be the judge...and your heart the jury...

Glenn Jones album THE WANTING on Thrill Jockey Records is a certified winner!

John Fahey - Your Past Comes Back to Haunt You

Ah, is there anything more beautiful than a boy and his guitar?  Maybe if I had slept with my guitar more I would be a fine player today.  Yes, I said "more" didn't I?  Well, who hasn't slept with their guitar, a little?  More previews HERE.

The Dust to Digital site is about ready to release this mammoth set of recordings on the world.  In case you aren't up with all the details, here's a bit of what it's all about.
More than 10 years in the making, this box set features the earliest recordings and the first book ever written about one of the most influential guitarists from the 1960s and ‘70s, John Fahey. The five CDs feature 115 tracks, most of which are available on CD for the first time. The audio was remastered from Joe Bussard’s reel-to-reel tapes to achieve pristine sound quality. As for the accompanying book, the list of scholars who contributed essays includes Eddie Dean, Claudio Guerrierri, Glenn Jones, Malcolm Kirton, Mike Stewart and John’s childhood friend R. Anthony Lee. Byron Coley contributed a poem about John, and Douglas Blazek’s 1967 interview with Fahey is published for the first time. Released 10 years after John Fahey’s death, this set puts one of the final puzzle pieces of Fahey’s career in place. Everyone can now hear where this guitar legend got his start – a smoky basement in Frederick, Maryland. Co-produced by Dean Blackwood of Revenant, Glenn Jones, and Lance Ledbetter of Dust-to-Digital, this set is released with the support of Joe Bussard and the John Fahey Estate. The set is dedicated to John’s mother, Jane C. Hayes and the late musician Jack Rose.

THIS SET IS AVAILABLE FOR PRE-ORDERS AND WILL SHIP BY OCTOBER 11, 2011 -- THE OFFICIAL RELEASE DATE.

There's talk that there may be release parties with as many of the fine people that worked on this in attendance as possible, including Glenn Jones.  Keep you eyes open for those events, I'll try to post them if I hear about them.  Meanwhile, go buy this thing!
